Hurray!!! Olumo High School Clocks 35.
Olumo Commercial
was founded by Chief Jonathan Durojaye Odebunmi
in 1946 and later taken over by the Ogun
state government and renamed Olumo High
School in 1980 till date. As a government
School, the school was founded in September, 1980 in the Sabo area of the
ancient city of Abeokuta.
Olumo High School derives her name from Olumo
rock. “Olumo” or “Olufimo” is a symbolic word and is associated with Egba
kingdom in Abeokuta. Olumo rock, one of the most popular tourist destinations
in Nigeria, West Africa, sits in the ancient city center of Abeokuta – a name
which means “Under the rock”. Abeokuta was originally inhabited by the egba
people who found refuge at the Olumo rock during inter-tribal wars in the 19th
century. The rock provided sanctuary to the people as well as a vantage point
to monitor the enemy’s advance leading to eventual triumph in war.
The town of Abeokuta eventually grew as these new
settlers spread out from this location. Olumo is the name of the most
significant land formation in true ancient town of Abeokuta. In keeping faith
with the ritual of emphasizing the importance of the rock to the city of
Abeokuta and its people, the founding fathers of Olumo High school were left
with no choice than to name the school “Olumo
High School”.
The school has since metamorphozised with time
from her old location near Gaa-Sabo to its present location now. Since inception, Olumo Commercial /High
school has been led by various administrations as shown in the next Table.
